Tanjore Fort fell to cannon fire, a poet-king chose death over surrender, and a dynasty ended in flames — all over wounded royal pride.In 1673, the young king of Madurai sent a marriage proposal to his neighbor in Tanjore. The Tanjore king not only said no — he insulted the envoys and sent them away in humiliation. What followed was a full-scale military invasion, a brutal siege, the fall of one of South India’s most powerful forts, and the violent end of an entire ruling dynasty. All of it sparked by a rejected marriage offer.
