The road from Salem city unfolds through a classic Tamil Nadu landscape. Fields of tapioca and sugarcane stretch out, broken by sudden clusters of ancient hills. The air is warm and carries the scent of dry earth. About a dozen kilometers before the busy town of Attur, a structure rises from the land. It does not sit gently upon it. It looks like it grew from the earth itself. This is Attur Fort.
